Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a registered charity
which selects and trains dogs to respond to specific sounds which
hearing people often take for granted, such as the alarm clock,
doorbell, baby cry, telephone and smoke alarm.

1982-2007: 25 years of changing
lives |
Instead of barking, the dogs alert the deaf person by touch, using
a paw to gain attention and then leading them back to the sound
source. For sounds such as the smoke alarm and fire bell, the dogs
will lie down to indicate danger. To read more about Hearing Dogs
please read our article on Hearing
Dogs for Deaf People.
2007 sees Hearing Dogs celebrating
25 years of changing people's lives. Hearing Dogs says "During
this eventful quarter of a century, Hearing Dogs has created
more than 1,300 life-changing partnerships between trained
hearing dogs and deaf people."
Hearing
Dogs was officially launched at Crufts in 1982. The 25th birthday
celebrations will continue throughout the year. Hearing Dogs
hope to raise funds and make
even more people aware of the wonderful dogs that change lives.
They will be holding a series of events
aimed at raising awareness and funds. |

On
9th March 2007, Hearing Dogs are holding a media launch at Crufts
to celebrate the official birthday. Throughout the months that follow,
numerous other events will be taking place across the UK, including
fundraising dinners and fundraising events at National Trust properties.
The public will be given the opportunity to see Hearing Dog demonstrations
and meet some Hearing Dogs and their owners at selected National
Trust properties.

Karen
Lawe is one of Hearing Dogs busiest volunteers. Karen is
also a valued member of D for Dog, informing members of
charity events and even contributing by writing reports
for D for Dog.
As part
of her volunteer work for Hearing Dogs, Karen is a regular
puppy socialiser. This involves taking young dogs into her
home, teaching them basic obedience and introducing them
to a wide variety of stimuli.
Karen also helps at Hearing Dog fundraising events. If
this wasn’t enough this year Karen has decided to
do a bit extra. She will be doing a parachute jump, a fire
walk and then for a finale she will swim with sharks. |
|
To
meet Karen and others from the Hearing Dogs team and learn more
about their fantastic work, Karen will be helping to man the Hearing
Dogs stand at Crufts 2007
on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. She will be collecting as many
sponsorships as she can, so pop along and sign up to sponsor her
for one or all of the events.
Alternatively, Karen has a sponsorship page www.justgiving.com/KarenLawe
which makes it easy for anyone to sponsor her for the events.
Karen's first event will be a parachute jump in July, followed
by a fire walk in August and diving with sharks in October. Karen
says "Donating through this site is simple, fast and
totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me:
Hearing Dogs For Deaf People will receive your money faster and,
if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to
your gift at no cost to you."
Another way to help Hearing Dogs celebrate their 25th Anniversary
in 2007 is by becoming a Hearing Dog Friend from just £3
a month. See the Hearing Dogs website for details.
