Having used James Wellbeloved
for many year longer than I care to admit, it could
do no wrong in my eyes as they beheld my healthy calm
and happy dogs. Oh dear, things seem to have changed!
I recently put my 2 yr old Papillion on to the Adult
Lamb and Rice for small breeds. My little Papillion
is not a fussy eater, but to say he does not like this
food is the understatement of the century. He will do
anything to avoid it! JWB used to produce small compact
and infrequent poos! No longer is this the case. I wont
go into gory details except to say they are larger and
certainly more frequent than before... and all this
is from a little dog who has only eaten a fraction of
what he would normally eat over a day.
As the saying goes "nothing lasts forever - good
or bad", and unfortunately having had nothing but
'good' from JWB over the years it is now time to move
on and look for another food to restore my faith and
my little dogs enjoyment of the same. Farewell JWB,
and it might be an idea to read some of the contacts
sent to you through your JWB site. I have written asking
for advice twice in the last week. No response or acknowledgment,
so if you can't be bothered to look after your customers,
they can't be bothered to buy your goods. |

| I am a long term dog owner and
always fed all 3 of my bitches on JWB as it was recommended
as 2 of my dogs had severe bowel sensitivity. It did harden
the poo, but didn't get rid of the problem entirely and often
there were biscuits still left in their bowls, they just seemed
to pick at it. One of my bitches is a weimerana X and it extremely
hyperactive anyway. She became agressive and agitated every
time she had eaten and decided to change her food. She is
now on Harrington's natural turkey & veg dried food and
the results have been amazing, she cleans her bowl, she is
calmer and more relaxed and her poo is solid and she goes
less frequent. I have read a lot of other reviews on JWB and
agression & hyperactivity seems to be common in dogs eating
this food. I will never go back to JWB and wasn't aware they
tested on animals until reading these posts. That is a definate
NO NO for me. I am just trying to find out whether Harrington's
test on animals and if so I will be switching to Burns. |

First
things first. My 2 x Springers love this food, especially
the Duck flavour. Some loose stool and flatulence when first
introduced to it, but this passes in a week or so. Far better
quality food than all of the brands available in supermarkets.
Secondly. Of course JWB is "tested" on animals.
How on earth do you think they find out if it tastes good
for a dog / cat? There will be no "traditional"
animal testing of the type most commentators on this site
imagine: Toxicity testing, mutagenicity testing, teratogenicity
testing, etc, etc. ie the animals that "test" JWB
are not kept in cages and given chemical compounds to see
if they develop cancer, a 5th leg, mutant puppies etc. Its
just pet food!!! Human food is not subjected to this level
of research, why should pet food be?
If you want to take issue with animal testing and vow never
to use a product that has been tested on animals, then you
will have to avoid all pharmaceuticals. Every pill, potion
and lotion you have ever taken has at some point in its development
been tested on at least 2 mammalian species. Why? Because
it is law. Think
a little, please. |

I
have fed JWB for years and my dogs love it especially the
pouches. My boy mini long haired dachshund Dai was fed Eukaneba
when I bought him but I soon changed him to JWB as he didn't
seem to like the other food but now he can't wait for meal
times and starts getting excited when he hears the food being
put into his bowl. I must add also that my eldest dog a long
coat chihuahua was 20 years old when she died and was fed
mainly JWB as she got older though we moistened her biscuits.
I also lost my old lady daxi last year she was 19 years old
and loved her JWB food.
My sister also feeds JWB to her chihuahuas and daxi's and
we have had comments about the dogs coats and how healthy
they look, and her eldest tricky voo is 13 years old and acts
a lot younger. |

| I feed my Hungarian Vizsla on
Orijen, it's not cheap but well worth it, no yukky cheap fillers
that bloat the dog out and can make them hyper, I can say
this as I did try my dog on JWB, then when I actually did
some research I took him straight off of it and changed to
Orijen. I have my canine nephew staying with me at the min
and he is feed on JWB, well he was for a couple days, I have
put him on Orijen as well, he was hyper, thirsty and his stools
were very loose. Within 24 hours he had calmed down and now
has perfectly formed stools. |

| I used the Turkey and rice dry
puppy food as this is what the breeder was feeding him. My
cocker spaniel puppy was very thirsty and had very soft runny
poo on this food. Now on boiled rice and chicken and thinking
about trying Burns puppy food next. |

The feeding recommendations
are based solely on the age of the puppy. This led us to severely
overfeed our labradoodle, causing an unnecessary expensive
vet visit. They should put the feeding amounts based on weight,
and then we would not have made this mistake. I will therefore
not use this product again since this practice is potentially
very harmful to underweight puppies. This food is also not
as 'food dense' as Symply which also probably led to the very
loose stools and a significant amount of discomfort and so
I will be moving my puppy over to Symply.

Excellent
quality dog food. With regards to the animal testing, people
are getting carried away thinking that they must be force
feeding the dogs in cages or something equally ridiculous.
Please obtain the facts before making such comments:
"James
Wellbeloved do no use any invasive methods of testing, the
only testing we do is concerned with the palatability of our
products. Please find below a copy of our company statement.
Company
Statement
In view of recent stories in the press about cruel animal
testing by pet food companies, James Wellbeloved would like
to make the following statement:
1.
We undertake no testing on animals other than that which is
concerned with the palatability of our foods. Much of our
palatability testing takes place on pets owned by members
of staff at home. Because the tests involve the animals concerned
in trying a number of different and tasty foods, they normally
enjoy the tests very much!
2. No test interferes in any unnatural way with the physiology
of the animal nor produces any distress in that animal.
3. During the palatability tests, we take scientific measurements
concerned with the quantities eaten and the speed and eagerness
of eating. We also make subsequent analyses of naturally excreted
stool and urine to ensure that our foods are as healthy as
possible. These are the only scientific measurements that
we undertake.
4. We are a company of animal lovers and most of our staff
have pets themselves. We view the welfare and happiness of
pets as being of the greatest
The
thought of harming any pet for commercial reasons is therefore
abhorrent to us and would be totally contrary to the ethic
of the company."
This
is the type of testing I hope would take place on such a product,
if the dog doesn't like it, what is the point of making it!
Hope
this eases some of the worry people may have about this product. |

| I
have fed my dog on JWB since he was a puppy. He loves all
flavours and is excetionally healthy. However, the lady at
our local garden centre informed me that JWB is part of the
master food empire and they have recently added sodium chloride
to the "natural ingredients". She was trying to
sell me a product called "symply". I checked JWB
when I got home and sure enough it does contain sodium chloride
which it never use to. I am now considering changing the food,
especially now I've discovered who owns them. |

I
am using the cereal free range of JWB food and I cant rate
it enough! (didnt give 5* because it doesnt have as higher
protein % as I would like but everything else about this food
more than makes up for it).
My
dogs always had soft poos - not diarreah but soft. Anyway
after being on this food for 10 days their poops are hard
and less frequent. There is no maize or wheat in this food
so great for dogs with allergies. I cant believe how much
difference this food has made to my dogs. Soft & shiny
coats as well. Also my chocolate lab is prone to putting weight
on and she is looking very lean on this food thanks to no
crap ingredients that leave dogs bloated and not feeling good
at all.
If
you are in any doubt then get a small bg first but trust me
you will end up buying it long term. |

| I
have given this food a good rating as my 7yr old small jack
russell has never looked better. He is a fussy eater and loves
the Ocean Fish variety. I read a post on here about the kibbles
being too large for their small dog, I would suggest, if you
havent already, try the different flavours, as different flavours
come in different shapes. The fish variety are triangular
and he manages them very well. I tried the puppy variety for
my 2 month old jack russell and she didnt like it, she preferred
the adult version of same flavour and just about managed that
size.So I put her on Royal Canin Mini Puppy Vet Grade, but
they changed it without warning and she didnt like that, so
she is on Retail Grade now, but I am looking at changing again
as there seems a lot of maize and various animal proteins
in it, dont think this is a good thing when you compare it
to more natural animal foods. Also she seems far more hungry
on this one. My 7 yr old has had no problem at all with flatulence,
but I will say, he would not touch any of the other flavours.
So im wondering if those who have problems, it may just be
that particular flavour causing problems. His coat is gleaming
and has a lovely silky feel after just 2 weeks, something
he has never had before and i have tried many, many brands.
The only reason I dont give this food 5* is because I have
recently found out that they conduct animal testing. |

I
used to feed my Hungarian Vizsla puppy on this food, but found
that although she seemed to really like it, she drank excessive
amounts of water, had runny stools, and was very hyper. I
have been feeding her on Hill's Science Plan for larger breeds,
which seems to have calmed her down a lot. She doesn't need
to drink as much and tends to poo a lot less (oh and JWB gave
her awful flatulence, now improved!!). I didn't know about
the animal testing until Icame on this site, so I am glad
I changed her diet.
I am thinking about changing from Hill's, as I have heard
the ingredients aren't great...but I'm a little unsure what
to try next as there don't seem to be a huge amount for larger
breeds that come recommended. |

| I
have used James Welbeloved for many years. The dogs are healthy,
happy and in super condition. However I was horrified to hear
the product is tested on animals. I will try to get more information
and if it true then I will not be using James Wellbeloved
again. |

| I
fed James Wellbeloved to my pets until I discovered that they
carried out the most horrific tests on animals. I am an animal
lover and there was no way I could continue buying JWB knowing
the horrific suffering these poor unfortunate animals were
suffering to feed my pets. There are many very good top class
pet foods out there and if all pet lovers would stop buying
food tested on animals then this barbaric practice would stop.

| I
have chosen this food because I have met lady with labrador,
which have the most beautiful coat I have ever seen on lab.
She said that he has it since she changed to JWB so I am giving
it a go. Also, somebody here written that his dogs are not
so keen. My friend explained to me that if your dog is used
to food which has added nasties (colours, salt...) usually
the ones with loads of colours to represent veg, meat.....
so he wouldn’t like the healthy food. Its like feeding
your child McDonalds and candy and than change it to super
healthy diet. He wouldn’t like it either. So just tell
your dog that he is not having anything else :-) Mine doesn’t
eat it in the am, just waits all day for something better
and when sees that I am serious and not giving up, than eats
it all pm :-) |

| Though
my 8-9 month old rescue rottie was fed this brand by the RSPCA
which I have continued it is now time to find a suitable alternative.
She is on the junior variety and though she seems to love
the taste, it consistently gives her awful flatulence and
faeces which are impossible to pick up with a bag as they
represent cow pats!!!! |

| Unfortunately
both my dogs love this food, I say unfortunate as they do
test on animals to make it. So when Ilook at how healthy my
dogs are and their shiny coats all I think of is how other
dogs are sufferering for them. So I'm caught between a rock
and a hard place, I know it's good for my dogs as I can see
the good health, but I also know that if I continue to buy
this stuff more and more animals will suffer. |

All
three of mine are on JWB lamb and rice, one of which is the
light/senior. I moved to JWB when I had probs getting the
Burns I wanted and have just not gone back as my lot seem
to do fine on it. The kibble is crunchy which means it helps
alot with dental care. I use it as it has no additives but
I was not aware of the animal testing....I will have to weigh
up the pros and cons now.
However for availability and choice it is very good. Presently
my pet food supplier is having a buy 5 get one free with JWB
so I have a little card on which each purchase is marked off
until I can claim my freebie - he said it is a JWB promotion
not his. |

| As a dry food I
liked this one for its variety of flavours. Unfortunately
they don't do a small bite variety for smaller dogs as Tia
won't eat the bigger biscuits and puppy variety was not beneficial
to her. Overall though a good food, with a good variety of
flavours. |

James Wellbeloved
are owned by Mars, who also make Pedigree petfoods, and who
have not signed up to the no animal testing policy. This means
there is every likelihood that this food is tested on laboratory
animals in cruel conditions. For this reason I would not recommend
it. For more details see:
